Tips for Storing E-Liquid

Nothing lasts forever, not even your favourite e-juice.

Yes, it’s a sad fact that, left to their own devices in their plastic bottles, your favourite e-liquids are liable to lose both their flavour and their punch. However, there are ways and means of extending the shelf life of your favourite e-liquid and they all come down to adopting good practices when storing your juice.

With many of us buying our e-liquids online in bulk during the current coronavirus lockdown, it has never been so important to begin using good storing habits.

Here are some top hints and tips for our customers.

Come over to the dark side

Two of the biggest factors to consider when storing your e-liquid are light and heat – they are your worst enemies. Why? The combination of light, heat, and air can cause the nicotine in your juice to produce cotinine. Whilst not dangerous, it does reduce the potency of your nicotine hit and the chemical reaction can alter the flavour of your e-liquid. Keep your juice somewhere cool and dark, be it a medicine cabinet, the drawer of a bedside cabinet, or at the back of your wardrobe.

Lose your bottle

Specifically, the bottle your e-liquid comes in. These are usually plastic, since they are cheap and easy to manufacture in bulk and keep the cost of your e-liquids down. This is fine if you’re going to use it up quickly. For extended periods you risk the possibility of the plastic reacting with the juice, causing a change in flavour and potency. Try transferring the e-liquid to a glass bottle for a more longer-term storage solution. You can even buy tinted glass bottles that will further protect your juice against the light, as discussed above.

Long-term storage

Most e-liquids have a shelf life of around two years. If you’ve bought or mixed in bulk and are worried about losing it over that time, there is an answer. Since the PG/VG base liquids used in e-juice have such a low freezing point, it’s perfectly fine to store them in the freezer. The only issue is that the liquids can thicken during the freezing process, so leave them to warm up to room temperature before using.

Here at F&S DIY E-liquid we have a wide selection of premixed and DIY e-liquid ingredients available in our online store. All products benefit from fast UK delivery across the UK.
